6 December 2023Gastronomy in Epirus and especially nowadays plays a very important role both in everyday life, from how we eat at home, to entertainment or entertainment in the tourism.
In Greece, although Mediterranean cuisine prevails, there are also local gastronomic rules depending on the geographical area you visit.
Epiros and its inhabitants, living at a very low standard of living for many years in the past, were forced to use very specific products for their everyday feeding. And as the wise people say "poverty breeds ideas", so the Epirotes were forced to create a unique local cuisine and today we have become a gastronomic identity for Epirus.
The Epirus people are unique in bread making. For many years there was a rumour that almost all the bakeries in Athens and the urban areas were owned by continentals.
The art of using the raw material of flour has left us a legacy of unique Epirus pies, with the dominant one being aleuropita or zymaropita.
In order to ensure their livelihood by having a dozen or so sheep and goats, the family exploited to the fullest the products that these animals gave them. They created the unique Continental dairy products, cheese, yoghurt, goat's cheese and butter.
The products offered by the mother earth became a guide for the creation of unique dishes such as giants, bean soup, spinach pie, prasopita, goulash.
The need for sweets in combination with the abundance of fruit gave us the unique jams and the famous spoon sweets. They created the traditional rice pudding and Epirus cream.
Certainly the existence of the Turkish yoke for many years contributed to the introduction of continental cuisine and oriental elements. Because of this fact we have in the Epirus cuisine dishes such as turlou and sweets such as baklava.
Nevertheless, the continental cuisine keeps its character through time with the central elements of sheep meat, dairy products, pies and spoon sweets.
Today the visitor in Epirus you will find restaurants of high gastronomic interest with strong elements of Epirus cuisine and international cuisine, but you will definitely find traditional taverns with unique recipes from Epirus.
Surely the continental cuisine and hospitality will not leave you hungry or indifferent.
