
Gastronomy in Epirus
3 December 2023Tourism in Epirus and in Greece in general, called the country's industry, although the term is far from the reality, has been developing for the last 50 years or so in mainland and island Greece.
Tourism in Greece, although its original concept was associated with hospitality, has in recent years been facing an identity crisis and the development of poor copying of other tourist destinations.
Epirus was and remains one of the poorest regions of the Eurozone, although in recent years several infrastructures have been implemented in order to improve the quality of tourism development.
Looking back, in the early 1990s, the first organised tourists arrived in Epirus, with the possibility of providing official accommodation, mainly in the coastal areas of Parga and Preveza.
Then followed other areas of Epirus such as Sivota and Perdika, and later mountainous areas such as Ioannina, Metsovo, Zagorochoria and Tzoumerka.
Today, road, air, port, accommodation and catering infrastructure is provided almost all over Epirus.
The visitor in Epirus has the choice of seaside tourism, on the coasts of Igoumenitsa, Plataria, Sivota, Perdika, Parga and Prevasa, alternative and nature tourism, in areas of natural beauty such as the Acheron Springs, Ioannina, Metsovo, Konitsa, Zagorochoria and Tzoumerka, religious tourism, since Epirus has numerous monasteries and historical churches, and medical tourism, since Ioannina is a city with a University of Medicine and with prominent doctors of all disciplines.
The visitor will reach Epirus through a satisfactory and safe road network or by air and will find accommodation from small traditional guesthouses to luxury hotels and apartments.
It is possible to rent cars and vehicles of all types, from bicycles to pigs or jeeps for the mountains.
It will combine sea, rivers, lakes and mountains. It will walk on beautiful mountain trails. You will visit world heritage sites. You will get to know the traditional architecture of Epirus and the traditional gastronomy. You will taste unique traditional recipes, local tsipouro and unique wine in the excellent wineries of Epirus.
In conclusion, if the Thesprotia and Epirus believes and trusts in its principles of hospitality and traditions, it can become a magical destination that visitors will love.
