29 February 2024The city of Igoumenitsa is offered as a starting point with many options for day trips and excursions. Depending on your interests, you can explore the beautiful beaches of the area, visit archaeological sites and some of the most picturesque villages of the region, as well as various nearby cities.
Beaches: If you want to relax in the sun and sea, you can visit beautiful beaches in the area, such as the beach of Drepano, the beaches of Plataria and of course the sandy beaches with the deep blue waters of the Sivoton.
Archaeological sites: In the area there are several archaeological sites that you can visit, such as the mythical Necromancy of Acheron, the ancient city of Nikopolis with its archaeological museum, the ancient theatre of the Gitans and the ancient theatre of Dodoni.
Parga: It is about 30 minutes by car from the Igoumenitsa (45km) and is a beautiful seaside town with impressive architecture, with its beautiful alleys and impressive castle, wonderful beaches and lively nightlife.
Paramythia: It is about 30 minutes by car from the Igoumenitsa (30km) and is a picturesque town with interesting monuments, such as the Ieros Church of St Donatus, patron saint of the area, the castle and the holy Byzantine church of Panagia.
Ioannina: It is the largest city of Epirus, less than 2 hours away by car from Igoumenitsa (80km). It is a city known for the beautiful Lake Pamvotida, which gives a unique charming landscape to the area as well as for its impressive castle that encloses the old town with its narrow streets and traditional houses. In addition, the area has a rich tradition of culture and folklore, with many museums and traditional arts that you can explore. Finally, the gastronomy of the region is excellent, with many local dishes and delicious traditional recipes.
Metsovo: At a distance of less than an hour from Ioannina is the picturesque Metsovo with its traditional architecture standing out. One can visit the Metsovitiko Museum of Traditional Arts to learn more about the local history and tradition. It is also suitable for snow and ski lovers, as they can visit the ski resort of Anilios.
Preveza: The coastal town of Preveza is another option for a day trip. It is a little more than an hour from Igoumenitsa (90km), but it is a rewarding route as it allows the traveller to visit some of the most beautiful beaches of the region, such as Ammoudia, Alonaki, Loutsa, Kanali and Monolithi. The city centre of Preveza is full of beautiful traditional alleys, restaurants and cafes, where one can enjoy the local cuisine and wander through the atmosphere of the old town.
Arta: It is about 1,5 - 2 hours away (120km) by car from Igoumenitsa and has interesting sights, the most famous being the legendary bridge of Arta over the river Arakhthos. The town of Arta offers a unique atmosphere, with its traditional alleys, cafes and taverns serving traditional local dishes, while the area around the town is known for its natural beauty, with many trails for hiking and exploring the landscape.
Meteora: The Meteora and Kalambaka are another excellent choice for a day trip starting from Igoumenitsa, as they are far from about 2.5 hours (170km). Meteora is known for the impressive rocks that emerge from the ground, leaving the visitor's mouth agape, with monastic settlements adorning their top. It is a unique place, offering amazing opportunities for hiking. At the foot of Meteora is the town of Kalambaka. It is worth visiting the Museum of Natural History of Meteora, to wander the streets of the town and enjoy the atmosphere of the traditional taverns and cafes.
